The Dispute Settlement Centre of the Department of Justice is committed to helping people resolve their own disputes.

Their service is free, confidential, quick, easy to use and available across Australia.

The Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria provides an informal, impartial, accessible, low cost dispute resolution service to all people in Victoria. They deal with a wide range of disputes including business disputes.

They can assist in resolving disputes between individuals, groups or even whole organisations. Services fall into three categories:

• Dispute Advisory Service and referral to other agencies
• Mediation
• Community education

The service is free. There is no charge for:

• Their Dispute Advisory Service.
• Any information they send out.
• The mediation rooms (they also hire their rooms to provide mediators for a fee).
• Interpreters (on the phone or at mediation).
• The mediators' attendance and time.

However, where they are assisting large organisations to resolve complex internal matters, which may involve many sessions, they may require them to cover expenses.

All contact with their service is confidential and is covered by sections 21L-21N of the Evidence Act 1958.
